I work for a high end steakhouse owned by Ruths Chris hospotality group. On a daily basis, the only black employee was allowed to be called nigger by the chef and his assistant, both were considered managers. This went in front of most of the staff while the gm and her assistant did nothing,no one was talked to ,written up suspended and they never told human resourses. The Spanish speaking kitchen staff has and still is allowed to call the women whores and bitches. gay men faggots,and sexually harass both. We have a assistant gm that hates jewish people so much (70% of our clientel is Jewish) that one night he said he would like to put them all in our private dining room and turn the gas on. Once I asked him why we didnt have any black servers and he said \\\"the people who come in here to eat dont want niggers waiting on them. I had to be the one to blow the whistle on all of this, I was one of the gay men that was being called faggot in Spanish. Its clear that the word nigger carries a lot more fear then faggot , whores or any of the other racist ,homophobic ,anti semitic comments. One week the chef and his assistant were fired for their racist comments, this was a year ago. Im still being called faggot , women are harassed and called whores and bitches and the agm is still a manager there, the person that never reported our complaints, who looked other way and could be the person who helped get them into many law suits is still working there. Not much has change. In fact the person who calls me faggot is now threatening to injure or stab me and nobody seems to give a shit. I am thinking about going public with this storie and I believe this behavior runs rampant in the restaurnt industry and its like its expected and we just dont talk about how poorly we are treated ffor $2.65 an hour in Michigan. Its a stressful job to begin with without the other b.s. Restaurants think they are expempt from normal labor laws that protect harassment. If any one has a story to tell about any of these situations or others, I am especially interested in gay or lesbian stories because there are only 29 States that include sexual orientation as a protected class. so they really don\\\’t have to help or protect you. in fact in the other states they can fire a gay person just for being gay and there is nothing we can do about it. I have a feeling that gay people are harassed at work alot,again especially in our business. All of this needs to come to light along with what managers and owners expect from us for one third of minimum wage. I will bet 90 % of the country has no idea that most of us make $2.65 an hour and we take alot of crap,guest,management kitchen staff it all falls on us, we work hard no lunch break no 10 minute breaks its crazy what they get away with.
