All Over the Chicagoland Area

Establishment: Most Dunderheads

Location: Chicago

I have recently moved to Chicago and am appalled that there are not only no jobs here, the ones that are here want to pay a hilariously low wage.Who besides drug dealers can live on $8 and $10 per hour?

The few hospitality staffing agencies only offer $8-$15 per hour and RARELY give $20 per hour.

There is this sinful old hag who advertised on Craigslist for \\\"Waitstaff\\\" for her staffing company, drilled me about 3 and 4 star fine dining experience,(which I have)and emphasized that she checked references. (which is fine) but before I set up an interview, I asked her what the range in rates were and she said, $12-$15 per hour. WTF? For 3 and 4 star experience? Get real. I read online reviews of her company and she hires a lot of bottom of the barrel people or so her  former clients say.

Management positions that I have come across average $35,000 per year.  A waiter in a decent restaurant makes more than that.

Doing the math on what it would take to live in this town, it doesn\\\’t add up and I don\\\’t know how these people do it, besides each and everyone of them doing something else on the side to make up the difference.

Most of the restaurants are owned by chains, (it seems Lettuce Entertain You, owns almost every restaurant in this town) are ok and nothing to write home about. There are painfully few quality restaurants that are independently owned where the priceppoint allows someone to make a reasonable living.

Sorry to say it but Chicagoans have some wierd infreriority complex when it comes to NYC.  It\\\’s sad because the people here are very nice, pleasant, loyal and really treat you like a human being, which is more than I can say about NYC or LA.

Chicago has 10.25% sales tax and 11.25% in a downtown Chicago restaurant, the highest in the country.

The price of a CTA ride is going up to $3 per ride and $115 for a monthly pass and they plan to cut the already slow service as well if, passed, it will be the highest in the country.

Chicago is amoung the highest car insurance rates in the country

You can get a relatively cheap apartment under $800 per month and be able to live by yourself though, it may not be in the best area or close to public transportation, but it is  possible.

I\\\’m glad that they lost the bid for the Olympics, this town is so plagued with stagnacy, corruption and complacency that it would have benefited very few and brought more illegal undocumented workers to this already job challanged place.

Chicago has such world class potential but unless there is some major changes, it will continue to lag behind.

There are decent jobs in this city, however there are a lot of bullshit jobs that somebody w/ an I.Q. above the room temperature; would know better to stay away from. anybody complaining about cta fare, try getting a car if u know how to drive. as for world class, your standard of living is on par w/ an ant colony; good luck pal really….

Our wages are lower in this city but it is because New York Restaurant workers are organized and have fought to improve the conditions of their industry that’s something that we here in Chicago really need to do as well

Thanks for the curious 1st post that proved my point about Chicagoans having an inferiority complex. The 1st attempt at a rebuttal is a parody of itself complete with creative grammar.

The second poster. People in the fair and beautiful city of Chicago are far to nice and complacent. It’s hard for me to have respect for a group of people who consistently root for loosing sports teams and wait years to buy season tickets for said teams giving the owners of those teams no incentive to provide and spend money on coaching, quality players or a winning game plan, but I digress.

The short time that I spent working in Chicago , I met a lot of really great people who deserve better. Change is uncomfortable, but in the end it’s worth while. Good Luck.

Whatever!! I’ve worked in NY and Chicago. Pretty much the same rate/deal, wage and tip wise. You make your $$$ on tips unless you work at at hotel or banquet type place. Get over it or move!
