Manager gone nuts

Establishment: Cheeseburger in Paradise

Location: Algonquin

Have you ever had a manager that makes your life miserable and you don’t want to go to work?   Well I sure do.  He brings the whole staff down.  He starts clapping in the kitchen to try to motivate the staff and we all just want to get out of there.  He yells out numbers of goals he wants to reach. He comes in saying he is in a mood to fire someone and puts all of us on edge.  He wants us to make money for the restaurant but doesn’t care about if we make money.  On slow nights he wants way too many servers on the floor.  W all make no money because of it.  All of us are ready to quit and and make him have no staff whatsoever.  How can we make him appreciate us more?

UUUMMM< you can quit! If everyone quits on him then he will maybe see the error of his ways! If not then he will just do it to another round of employees.

Oh you can also collect unemployment if when you file you make sure that you have explained all of this and that you could no longer work in a threatening work environment. Harrassment is your case and what he is doing is harrassment, it does not have to be sexual to be considered this. Just has to be a hostile work environment with unwanted language or comments

The whole staff should list their concerns in writing and address it to corporate. If everyone complains maybe they will take notice. Anything the manager does after that can be considered retaliation. Unfortunately overstaffing will not concern corporate; they care about service, not about how much money servers make. I would stress the comments he makes about ‘being in the mood to fire someone’. This is hostile and unprofessional. Stressed-out servers will not be able to provide proper service to guests if they are being harrassed by managers. Find a new job! It doesn’t sound like the money is good anyway!

Actually, being a Southsider myself (and realizing that my post comes several months after yours), I have no idea if it’s worth the commute for you to get to the Des Plaines CIP location, but a man named Tom Fremarek runs the show there, and he is the best GM I have ever had the pleasure to work for. I worked for him at a now-closed restaurant on Navy Pier, Buffet was always his passion, and he’s a great all-around guy. Hope this helps.
