I recently applied for a server position in an upscale restaurant on the northshore. The menu is European French and quite pricey. I have worked on the northshore for almost thirty years and I was born in Chicago. I was required to speak Spanish in order to be even considered for the position. What is so discouraging about all this is that as an American I’m required to speak Spanish in a French restaurant owned by Americans and patronized by rich American northshore socialites. The food is not Spanish. The owner is not Spanish and the customers are definitely not Spanish. If I were to move to Mexico I would not expect my employer to require all their Mexican employees to speak English in order to communicate with me. However I choose to stay in my country and speak English. I have paid my dues in the industry and my taxes as well and I feel that I have earned the right to speak English but not the right to work. This seems to be more and more common in work force in this country. I was being required to speak English in order to communicate with the kitchen and bus staff. Why are these employees given jobs with no requirement to speak English in my country? Hey owners, the unemployment rate is bad enough for our citizens. I feel that if you want to work here learn some English instead of me taking Spanish classes so that I can work as an American. Owners you create this situation and its time to fix it. SPEAK ENGLISH! Any opinions out there?

I would not work at that place. if anybody asked me to speak a different language in my own country; I would tell to go f*ck themselves… and go back home where their academically lazy selves belong.
The biggest problem of it all is that the EEOC will not help non-Spanish speaking employees. They will bend over backwards to help Spanish speakers who feel discriminated against for being asked to speak English in the workplace.
This is total bullshit and when I will only hire people who can read write and follow a recipe, by the way they are only written in English!!! We would be expected to learn Spanish if we moved there so they need to learn English and I refuse to learn Spanish! Now in high schools they require two years of Spanish WTF!!!! I took 4 years of French and it help me ace culinary school! Spanish only helps the weak minded who can not or refuse to learn English!!!
Latinos will be the majority in this country soon get used to it. When the white ppl came from their countries they forced english on the natives so as latinos come in they are going to use spanish only logical

ya i hate that shit. this is america we shouldent have to speak forgin languages. everything i read is in english and spanish. i bet in mexico there applications are just in spanish. its not that they cant learn they just refuse to. i cant fuckin stand these illeagle people they are having a negitave affect on our country and economy. but i guess if you live in a toilet bowl for a country you would want to get out to. i think i speak for a lot of people when i say that illeagle mexicans are unwanted and unwelcome. go back to your dumpster of a country and stay there. dont come here and take the jobs. i think black and white people are entitled to jobs first. were americans in america. however they have some good ass weed. thats the only use i have for them. i have no problems with leagle people who came here the right way. at least they have enough respect to fallow our rules. iv worked with plenty of illeagles an i treat them with utter disrespect and i will continue to do so.
Listen, the truth of the matter is that the restaurant industry is populated with spanish speaking folks. These are facts. So, if you want to stay in the restaurant industry, take a quick spanish class. You know, many people have to learn things for their job. They have to learn computer programs, diversity training, blah blah blah. If you have to learn spanish, this should take you about 3 months to pretty much master it. Just do it and quit your bitching. Adios!

I’m a culinary graduate,been in resto. bussiness for a while.worked @ embassy suite rosemont the hotel is 95% mexican the kitchen 99%.one day i walked into the kitchen and overheard a pantry cook who happen to be related to the executive chef tells the line cooks we mexicans has to stick together or more negritos will come. (by the way i speak and understand some spanish)i pretended i did’nt hear that comment,when i did payroll i discovered this pantry cook is using two different names i ask the executive chef about it (not knowing at that time they were related) soon after i get work done thru production sheets nor support of E.C so i quite.
I also have been asked if I speak spanish, and if I say no, I won’t get the job. So, I said yes, I summered in spain all 4 years of high school so I am fluent. Well, the bumble headed owner didn’t speak spanish….so he took my word for it and hired me. About a month later, he heard me talking in english to the busboy and told me to speak spanish to get things done faster. I told him I did speak spanish but the busboy asked me to speak english so he could learn it. The owner was so mad and told the bus boy that this was not a language academy and he should watch sesame street if he wanted to learn english. Well, of course, the busboy didn’t know what he was talking about and the whole thing blew over. Now, I learned how to say a couple of things in spanish such as “clear the table” or “get water” or “more bread” and I just say that in front of the owner all the time. Now, the busboy asks which table needs water? And I walk away and pretend like I didn’t hear. Or, I pretend like I’m getting called from one of my customers and run away. It’s quite funny. And the dummy owner still doesn’t understand that I’m not fluent, never been to Mexico or Spain! hahahahahaa
I’ll bet that this restaurant is either Oceanique or Jackie’s Bistro. Oceanique has two weeks of UNPAID training. But guess fuckin’ what: They give you a five-course meal at the end of your training and tell you that it’s worth about $150. Oh, and it’s just tough shit if you don’t “make it” through training. Glad I didn’t fall for that one. Only hearsay, but I know people that thought Jackie’s Bistro fired their friend very unfairly. Evanston sucks anyway!
It’s good to see I’m not the only one who’s ticked off by the racist attitudes exhibited by the last 30,000,000 Hispanic immigrants. The whole situation wouldn’t exist if owners didn’t foster it. (It also wouldn’t exist if people were smart enough to figure out that this is what’s going on.) Owners, with government assistance, are causing people who should be united (citizens and LEGAL immigrants) to fight among themselves.
Owners are NOT on the side of citizens and legal immigrants. They are on the side of the people who will take the least, even if their employees have to learn another language, fluently, pick them up in the morning and take them home or to the train station at night, and generally treat many of them like children. Let alone the quality drop.
Owners say “I can’t afford to pay people a living wage, so I’ll figure out how I can make enough money to stay open any way I can. I don’t care who I hurt or rob (don’t think the illegals get treated fairly). Maybe they need to figure out how to run a profitable restaurant, i.e. a “viable business model”.
Racing to the bottom doesn’t take a brain, running a profitable business does. That’s the biggest problem of all.

THATS THE WHOLE POINT! YOU WANT TO WORK HERE? LEARN ENGLISH SO THAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE AND UNDERSTAND YOUR EMPLOYER, CUSTOMERS AND FELLOW EMPLOYEES THAT SPEAK ENGLISH.

Howdy. I’m fed up with too much Spanish language in my U.S.A.; France; [Denmark ?]; England. My Newyorrican too NOISY neighbor from a social service agency re AIDS/HIV, still ruins most of 2010 for me. I started grade school in a foreign language; NOT Spanish; but I don’t walk up to fok and start speaking to them in my 8 languages other tan English language; well, French to French tourists….Too much Spanish language has ruined my mind; I can think in the Spanish language and I don’t want to in my U.S.A.. Also, I studied classical Castellian Spanish; but am force to hear almost daily — harsh, shouting, Newyorrican, lower-class Dominican Republican; Mexican ; Ecuadorian ? ; Guatamalanm ? varieties of Spanish language. Mexican , Dom. Rep’s, Ecuadorians, Africans have taken over a certain street. El Barrio, and la republica are 2 of the worst slums in any Western country; in my experience. What gov’t person in U.S.A. decided to inflict Spanish language on us ? I loathe the foreign language ads in MTA; NYPL , etc.. Deport all illegal aliens, now, from my U.S.A.; sorry , good Tibetans. Boycott ; China, Mali, Senegal, Mexico, Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Jamaica,….I’ve a page list of things which I want to buy, BUT they’re NOT made in U.S.A.. Loudmouth Hispanics ruin almost every U.S.P. station I go to; and, an Art workshop I’m in; and, almost all my commutes. Everyone I’ve met from Hawaii, U.S.A. spoke English language. My budgie “speaks” my English, German, French beautifully. I’ve already prayed. Many other countries are stricted re immigration and about national language. I’m in agony.

Gosh! I’m not sure I SHOULD have an opinion, the last time I commented on a similar issue I was vilified as a racist…OH WELL, I totally agree with you! I think it is ridiculous the amount of money blatant illegal aliens are making in this country. Moreover, even if an immigrant IS legal, he/she should learn the language! Refusing to learn English is not only disrespectful but also plain stupid, unless he/she only wants to live, shop, etc. in segregated places. As far as owners, they only want to hire people who are expendable, like “Oh, Juan who only works for 6 bucks an hour under the table isn’t washing the dishes fast enough? Fire him, and call his cousin!!!!” So blame the owners in part, but blame the illegals too! They come here, work horrible long hours and labor for peanuts, so they can send cash back to their native counties. When an American applies for a job in the industry, the American looks like a primadonna or a lazy-ass because Americans want fair wages and to be treated with respect in the workplace. Bottom line? Unfortunately, this will continue so I suggest learn Spanish fast!!!
