Too many rants on this site seem personal so I’ll stick to the facts!!!!
Monk’s is a horrible place to work! I was unfortunate enough to last there several months and the things I witnessed and/or experienced personally…
1. I started on a Monday morning and as I was walking in met the lady I was replacing! Awkward, to say the least. I know, I know, BIG red flag, but it\’s a recession…
2. The head manager/bartender is an abusive drunk. She starts her day by filling a pint glass with vodka and she is HAMMERED by noontime, whereupon the staff is then verbally abused and called names (for example ‘LOSER\’ and ‘DORK FACE’). She will go outside and smoke cigarettes in the cold, wipe her runny nose with her bare hands and proceed to make cocktails, which is one of the most disgusting things I have ever witnessed in this industry.
3. The ‘managers’ are also ‘bartender’ and take half of the REAL bartenders’ tips. Admittedly, they do bartend somewhat; however, a large portion of their time is commited to managerial duties and I feel if they are not doing half of the bartending, they are NOT entitled to half of the tips!
4. With the managers taking tips behind the bar, the money is simply not adequate. I averaged, bartending 5 days AND 2 nights maybe 500 dollars a week! This was well over 40 hours of HARD work (no overtime pay).
5. The night manager is quite possibly the most ridiculous human being I have ever met…ABSOLUTELY unable to bartend and LAZY!!! She is so worried about making money yet she will sit at the end of the bar at around 8 o\’clock P.M. and have long, elaborate dinners…keeping the A.M. bartender who has been standing there since 9:30 A.M…it feels like a hostage situation after awhile…PLEASE GIVE ME MY TWO DOLLARS AND LET ME GO HOME!!!!!
6. Hourly wage is SOOO below minimum wage…acceptable if you\’re a TIPPED employee…I could work 7 hours and only walk with 20-25 dollars!
7. The A.M. manager forces the employees to participate in a jukebox pool so music is playing during lunch…when I explained I was unable to afford it I was subjected to verbal abuse (see #2).
8. The owner is verbally abusive as well. In a middle of a busy lunch I witnessed him scream at the waitresses and call them ‘idiots’. UNACCEPTABLE!
The straw broke when Vodka Breath asked me what my problem was and I expressed my displeasure at having to work harder than her yet share half of my tips…I was told to ’stick a tampon in it’. So I went looking for one and never came back…
I know during this time it is hard to find work and any job is better than no job, but try to steer clear from Monk’s Pub. The management is the most incompetent I have ever worked with!

Don’t know where Monk’s is - I’m from the burbs but you certainly don’t have to take that crap. Enough is enough. When is somebody going to stand up and say “WE ARE NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE?” I know I’m tired of walking on the eggshells everyday - because the owner had a bad day (too many drinks last night?) or whatever. We do work hard for our money, Last time I figured it out I’m averaging about $2o an hour but hell it’s hard. I’m totally drained at the end of the weekend. And by the way-it is not ok to be abused by the help of any any kind - owner or dishwasher. Get a lawyer if things are that bad. Any lawyers out there want to take a bunch of hardworking people on for a class-action suit? I know I’ve trained at a few places for no pay = which of course is a bunch of bull…!
I was hired there as a day bartender and manager. The owner was trying to get me to sleep with him to keep my job. I was fired because I did not give in!!
That place is a dungeon!

Worked there in the late nineties. Nice to see things never change. Cindy was a beast ad Mike was a perverted asshole. Ahhhh the memories. She reallly still calls people “Dork Faces”?
HA! And the only “dorkfaces” are her and Mike, pervert du jour! Imagine, calling others “losers”…that lady couldn’t find another job in the city to save her life! It is quite sad when you think about it.
