This is a Great site but ……..

This has probably got to be one of the most insightful sites out
there regarding the restaurant industry. Speaking as someone who
is thinking of changing careers (from IT to chef and eventual
restaurant owner *cross your fingers*) this is very enlightening
because I can’t fathom how some people can treat their employees
this way. Although I have seen a fair amount of posts that seem
more like bitching than constructive criticism (which is probably
what this site was designed to provide instead of personal,
superficial insults directed at a person’s weight or style of
clothing), my hope is that most of these complaints are
legitimate and not done maliciously as a part of a personal
vendetta against a certain manager or owner. Anyway, this site
has been helpful to me because it has made think about aspects of
staff management that I haven’t yet considered when I think about
opening a restaurant and although I am nowhere near close to
opening a restaurant it is helping me reshape what type of
restaurant I want to open. It has also helped me consider of
list of things to inquire of employers once I do make that career
change. Also PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - If you want to be
taken seriously FOR GOD’S SAKES USE A FREAKIN’ SPELL CHECKER or
at least read your post over AT LEAST ONCE. Not that it has to
be completely perfect but DAMN make it look like you put some
thought into your complaint. I would say 1 of every 4 or 5 posts
have the most ATROCIOUS spelling errors\typos I HAVE EVER SEEN.
It is sooooo out of control! But that is my two cents. And
not to pick on anyone (it’s just that it was the last post I read
before writing this - and believe me this is not the worst error,
BY FAR!) THE WORD IS RAPPORT not REPORE - are you kidding me?

As a server for over 8 years, I have plenty of war stories and whistle-blowing to do too, but what really pisses me off about the employers who post on Craigslist is the blatant spelling errors! If I see an ad that reads, “buitful restaurant….”,there’s no way I’ll apply, because the manager is obviously some idiot.
Don’t we all have spell-check? You have to know that complaining about these crappy restaurants while misspelling just about every word just takes away your credibility! The same goes for extreme profanity , it proves nothing but how bitter and uneducated the poster is.
When was the last time you had respect for anything a guy with half his teeth missing has to say?
Just something to think about.

I don’t know if I have a spell-check. I have a Webster’s dictionary if push comes to shove. Anyway, bad spelling is the least of my worries. I’m more concerned about jerks who think their pearly whites make them better than someone who may have lost a few teeth somewhere down the road. And what does the use of profanity have to do with intelligence or education? It was good enough for the likes of Chaucer, Shakespear, and Joyce. Do you fancy your language skills to be somewhat loftier?

I’m a big fan of good spelling and punctuation. If I get a resume with more than one spelling error, it goes in the garbage. I will also not patronize a restaurant that has spelling problems on the menu, or cannot figure out the proper usage of “Its” versus “It’s”.

When I was a young cook fresh out of school, I worked at a big hotel. One day they rolled out the new room service menu. I found close to 20 grammatical errors and told the GM so. He was more upset that I would say anything about it than the fact that the errors even existed. Sorry dude, literacy is here to stay.

I appreciate good spelling, and I have pointed out spelling errors to my GM before (with much better results), but I didn’t know that poor spelling affects food and service quality!

In my opinion, spelling and grammatical skills indicate a level of attention to detail and being conscientious about things going out of the kitchen correctly. They indicate a person’s ability to communicate in a professional manner. If I’ve got a resume from a guy who couldn’t spell Cat if you spotted him the C and the T, what am I to assume about his work habits, punctuality, dedication? Basically if it’s half-assed, I don’t want it around. I don’t buy the argument about left and right brained people either, I know PLENTY of cooks and chefs who are both extremely creative and know how to express themselves in an adult fashion.

I would toss any resume with even one spelling error.
