I’m not sure what your point is except to show your clear dislike for servers as a whole. What you have stated is the negative side of some servers. I know many servers that show up day after day with a good attitude, do their job, make their money, learn all they can about food and wine and go home. What you have said about servers can also be said about managers, owners and chefs. If I wanted to give you a completely jaded and unfair description of some of the owners, managers and chefs I’ve worked with, believe me I could. I worked with a chef that burned the servers with excessively hot plates if they were not picking up their food quickly enough. He was brought up on charges to Human Resources. He was a pompous ass. I also worked with a manager who would consistently tell the servers at premeal that their were 6 million people in Boston and if we didn’t like it (at this particular restaurant) you could get the f–k out. Not a great way to start the day. Restaurants are not an easy business and sometimes attracts the lazy, the greedy, and the nasty. There is definitely a lot of “sexual favors” and favoritism that consistently exists which is annoying. By and large, there are so many exceptionally terrific people in the FOH and BOH that it makes the negatives not so important and gives you the ability to deal w/the bad.

just a thought….every server only cares about themselves and their own pocket? isn’t the pont of going to work about making money to support selves and family? i go to work because i need to survive, not to have money held back or bounced checks. when i go to work, i do a great job because i am a professional, and have been doing this for a long time. when i go to work, i wait on people as if it is the only time they get out (as is the way it is for me) and hope to make their stay an enjoyable one, and hope that if they are pleased with the service, they will show the gratitude.
every party is treated as if they are the only ones there, and i love my job. unfortunately, i am still owed quite a bit of money for several months now, and therefore, i can’t see that how i was given the same consideration for the job i performed.
left without a job, no notice, many phone calls to collect my earnings, no phone calls answered/ returned. told the account no longer exists to cash these checks, behind on my bills.
what’s left to say? yes, i am upset/bitter of it, and getting on with my life, but i still see no resolving of this matter. i am a server, not a volunteer.

i have worked in some aspect of the retail/hospitality industry for my entire life. it’s in my nature. it’s what i do. it’s who i am. therefore, i am extremely happy working for the absolute best catering company in Boston. the owners have very high standards. they expect alot from us. in return, we are rewarded very well financially, emotionally and otherwise. the attitudes about and from servers on this post are not tolerated where i work. in fact, they aren’t even hired. everyone that i work with from owners, managers, chefs, etc. has an honest, heart-felt desire to entertain and please our wealthy clientele. sure, we all need to make a living…but, we all have choices as to what it is that we do for work. if you are not happy with the bullshit, abuse, backstabbing, sexual innuendos, etc…QUIT!! it’s really that simple. if you are wasting your time and energy working at a place you hate, then you won’t be available when the right opportunity comes along. treat your friendships and romantic relationships the exact same way…you’ll be SO happy!! would you go on a 2nd date with someone you didn’t like or get really good vibes from? then why continue going to that awful job?

To Zack,
Good post. Based on what you say, you have a legal claim. In my state (Oregon) I would give you the phone number of the Bureau of Labor and Industry (BOLI). Your state must have something similar. These are government labor lawyers with enforcement powers. You pay nothing. I hope this helps.

I find KoKo’s post a little hard to take. Most people, and certainly most servers work because they need money. It’s that simple. They take jobs in restaurants and catering because those are the best jobs they can get. If they were wealthy they wouldn’t be waiters. This is true of most people who work in any profession by the way.

It’s wonderful you like your job. I’m sure the people you work for and serve love you. It’s the exploitation of people like you that got them were they are after all.
