A quick one about this place

Establishment: Broadway deli

Location: Santa Monica

I used to worked there. i worked with a girl on a very busy night a couple of years ago, she had an argument with the then manager who while yelling at her in front of the restaurant spit flew on her face. she wiped it off to which he replied "yeah that’s right i’ll spit on you whenever i feel like it!!! i think he still works there. oohh the stories i could tell!!oh! oh! i can top that!! the owners bring there friends in to eat. they take up a big table, eat and drink hundreds of dollars worth of food and liquor, stay for hours and then DON’T TIP THE SERVER!!! (the management hates this as much as the staff for the record) when asked why they don’t tip their response is "they are lucky to work here that’s tip enough." but the best part is that one of the owner’s (bruce marder) wife rebecca comes in to eat with her girlfriends. at the end of the meal when their food is comped her friends put a pile of $$ on the table for a tip. rebecca sits at the table waits for her friends to leave and then TAKES the $$$ and puts it into her pocket!!! i swear on my father’s grave!! this happened to me while the manager and i watched her do it!!!

As an owner of 2 restaurants, and before that a manager of many, i fervently believe that to not leave a server a proper gratuity is beyond shameless. And it is beyond my comprehension why this attitude prevails with so many owners and managers: it perpetrates the feeling, on behalf of so many employees, that they are condescended to, and left without any sense of dignity or “ownership” in their restaurant. in my shops, the staff comes first, and by doing so, the employee feels safe and cared for, and thus, will take care of the customer.

I’ve always been amused when other restaurateurs tell me that their staff “steals” from them. You can be very sure that that only takes place in restaurants that treat their employees poorly. What comes around, goes around.

TREAT YOUR STAFF WELL. DO ONTO OTHERS, YOU MORONS!
