Avoid at all costs
Establishment: ONE Sunset
Location: Hollywood
I had the misfortune of working for this company when it first opened. All of the staff was supposed to have two weeks of training but they were always canceling some of the days at the last minute without explanation (probably to avoid providing paid training). Lucky for us, we picked up things rather quickly so that wasn’t the problem. The problem was that during the soft openings, things got chaotic and everyone was scrambling all over the place to make sure we provided good service. The chef at the time was an asshole to the foodrunners and servers if one little thing went wrong. Instead of being helpful and giving us constructive criticism, our floor manager and general manager, would avoid stepping up to help even though teamwork was emphasized. They were too busy schmoozing with the D-List clientele. The patrons were often very nice and understanding when it was hectic during busy nights. I even had one guy tip me very well even though I had accidentally spilled a drink on him and his phone. But it didn’t matter if we had provided a nice evening for our customers, if everything wasn’t 100 percent perfect according to the managers, they would glare daggers at us. I received outstanding ratings from every single person who took the surveys. By the way, they put their tables too close together so the servers and foodrunners and bussers were always slamming into one another and there would be general confusion. They refused to fix that one problem of many. Our input was worthless. One of my tables had walked out and took their customer copy of a credit card receipt that was extremely high. I missed out on a 100 dollar tip unfortunately and I was busy running from end of the restaurant to the other and it was packed so I was doing my best to keep up. it was awful. That was my one off night and they let me go in spite of how well I had done other nights.
A couple of the managing partners are obnoxious people from the bronx who may dress nice and know a lot of famous people, but they are still trash. They provided us with pointless, additional busy work when we would already be busy with tables. Stupid stuff like cleaning wax out of a candle holder when I had to get cocktails for a table. most of the original staff is long gone because they were either fired over minor things or they quit.
Most of these trendy hollywood places are a nightmare to work for because the managers and owners care more about impressing the wanna-bes and posers. The A-listers are the ones who were the nicest to the bartenders and servers because they have been there themselves and offer some understanding towards our situation. But if you want to make a ton of money and put up with the abuse and neglect, go for it.
