This ad was posted on craigslist(Note that it’s asking to come in with picutre):
Server/Bartender needed, open call at Bogarts corner 39th and Park Ave 2-5 P.M. Resume with picture needed
Photos just help connect the person to the resume. I don’t think asking for a photo means they descriminate, it’s just a new tool employers are using now that we are in the digital age.
The only thing that could possibly stop this would be a class action lawsuit against craigslist, which I am not sure would succeed.
It certainly opens up the door to age, gender and race discrimination.
I don’t think this practice is as innocent as some posters do.
I LOVE THE PART HOW “TALLBLUE ” THINKS ITS INNOCENT FOR EMPLOYERS TO DO THIS..,THERE’S NO WRONGDOING IN THIS PRACTICE.., IT’S JUST A MODERN PRACTICE TO KEEP UP WITH THE “DIGITAL AGE”…????
I REGULARLY INTERVIEW AND LOOK AT REVIEW RESUMES ON A DAILY BASIS FROM BUSSERS TO FLOOR MNGRS. POSITIONS…ANY RESUME WITH A PHOTO GOES IN THE BACK OF THE PILE AND THOSE WITH STRONG SKILLS,STRONG/SOLID EXPERIENCE & LONGEVITY IN THE WORK PLACE, GET PRIORITY IN MY INTERVIEW PROCESS. I REMEMBER THOSE RESUMES, NAMES WITH THE MOST QUALIFIED SKILLS THAT WILL BRING THE BEST TO MY ESTABLISHMENT-
NOT THE FACE,AGE,ETHNIC LOOKS,OR PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES!!!!
THAT’S WHAT I CALL MODERN “DIGITAL AGE”
I worked in a very cute cocktail lounge 1 year ago. When my manager was looking for 2 waitresses he placed an ad on craigslist. I asked him if he requested pictures and he said he was not allowed to do that but if someone responds with out a pic he would reply to them.
This would normally be OK but this manager was in fact a racist. He claimed the corporate office wanted him to higher young waitress and that they had enough minorities. He also only hired white bus boys because he had a problem with Mexicans. Everyone has to do their part to stop dumb stuff like this from setting things back. I’m sorry that I didn’t.

I don’t see the problem with sending a photo. It seems to be the norm. Just think of it as a first interview without having to go anywhere. I would think the photo has little to do with hiring process…it’s just a way to get to know the applicant better.
