that using his/her approach most service staff would be white yuppies regardless of the “theme” of the restaurant. In fine dining the clientele is generally wealthier

You can’t discriminate against people for age, gender, race, or ethnic heritage.
It’s even an iffy question as to whether you can for looks. I’d say that restaurants asking for pictures are asking for it themselves.

as a matter of fact last week I went to an interview beign held by a very well know “Hospitality Group” located in the Union Square Park who is about to open a very anticipated restaurant in the Lobby of the Gramercy Park hotel,the guy who went by the name of Sam took a look at me and said: “..I just want you to know that this is not an interview….we are just calling people to see their faces/who they are and match the resume to the face…”!! THANK YOU FOR COMING BY…..

If anyone is stupid enough to actually respond to one of these ads and post a pic they deserve whatever they get.
Obviously if people are looking hard for work, and not being offered anything they will respond with a picture. It’s depressing, but I’d hardly blame the people looking for work.
I can’t believe all the complaining about this topic. I am a 12 year veteran server and I have worked everything from 50s diners to Chinese food to fine dining. I am a 6′1 Russian Jewish woman who has been thirty pounds overweight my entire adult life. I have textured ethnic type hair and the traditional Jewish nose. I have answered ads requiring pictures and you know what? I got the job. When people ask for a photo, it’s to make sure that you are confident enough about your appearance to send one in. Nobody at a high-end establishment wants to be waited on by a meth whore with no teeth or a man who doesn’t keep his facial hair trimmed. As long as you look presentable and professional, then the rest falls in line. Quit whining!!!
The restaurant business is show biz. You are trying out for a part. Welcome to hollywood. Please send a head shot. The picture requires only good looking people. If it is a Chinese restaurant at least look Asian. If it is a Latin restaurant or bar, please look Latin. There are no parts for fat ugly old people. No one wants to be served by them.
