Has anybody ever gotten a call back from a Jean~Georges restaurant?

Location: NYC

Always one to keep my eye open for a potential new opportunity I read the craigslist ads pretty much every day.

How many months has it been since I’ve seen Jean Georges restaurants advertising for all positions. They literally flood the craigslist job board with want ads.

On a lark I decided to send them my resume. I have about ten years of top industry 3 and 4 star experience, I have referances from not one but two "celebrity" chefs and I even have a good educational background. All this to no avail, no call back, no thank you for your interest e-mails, no interview to be set up.

I’m curious…has anybody ever worked for one of these places? Are they that bad that staff runs out in droves nightly? Are thier standards so high that only a select few make the cut?

Has anybody ever even gotten an interview out of these job ads?

Yup. Just went on an interview. Guy didn’t crack a smile once and everyone who worked their seemed like latino men. Don’t think I’ll get a callback. Don’t want to.

I’ve interviewed with them in the past. One time is all it took. I have no desire to work there. When I told others I went to the interview, I heard horror stories such as having to “schedule” when to go to the bathroom. Apparently FOH are treated like robots. I picked up on that during the interview. Also, I took my celebrity chef reference off of my resume. It hindered me more than helped.

I got a job through a CL ad at Perry Street a few months back. I liked the restaurant. I liked the management. I loved the atmosphere and the food. I left for a more lucrative opportunity because the money was mediocre at best. But I have nothing bad to say about the company at all. I know others who have complained about their treatment but mine was fine. Granted it was only at Perry St. I also interviewed and was offered a job at Jojo in the same time period but turned it down. I have a very solid resume as it sounds like you have one as well. I can’t tell you why I got an interview and you did not. I can also tell you that I am young-ish 29 but have 10 years in the business as well. I’m not a model type or anything like that. Just thought I would add my two cents. Best of luck in the search out there. I know it’s hard but to tell you ther truth there are plenty of jobs and i have found ample opportunities.

So , here they are again, posting another help wanted ad on Craigslist for ervers/Host/Maitre\’D for their newest Upper East side location-The revamped Marks Hotel.., trying to tempt those desperate, unemployed and not -so aware that this is the like the 7th time since last year that they are in need of \”Hosts/Maitre\”D or other staff…\” they must have a revolving door of new applicants or perhaps the reality is that Lois Freedman and her “buddy” James Liakakos-keep hiring and a couple of months down the road they have to cut back on staff …as threy did last year with Matsugen..,Jean Georges/Trump..,etc,YOU DON’T GET ANY PAID SICK DAYS UNTIL YOU COMPLETE A FULL 1 YEAR OF EMPLOYMENT AND YOU ONLY GET 2 SICK PAID DAYS-THEY CAN NOT HOLD GOOD STAFF DOWN TO STAY WITH THEM…YOU WONDER.

Dear applicants :DON’T BE FOOLED BY THIS RESTAURANT GROUP.., YOUR JOBS ARE NOT SECURE,THERE’S NO LONGEVITY HERE, YOU DON’T LAST MORE THAN 3-5 MONTHS IF LUCKY… OR IF YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE ONE OF THEIR FAVORITE GIRL OR GUY WITH MODEL LOOKS WHO AGREE TO THEIR EVERY WHIM.
I emailed my resume early last November and never heard from them…suddendly on January 29th I received a call from a rude man asking me if I was still interested in the position, I repiled “.. Sir, I submitted that resume 3 months ago and already I’m fully employed” he replied “…well I just got around to all of them ..” and hanged up the phone on me ..very abrasive, ill mannered -to say the least. So, I DON’T RECOMMEND THESE PEOPLE UNLESS YOU ENJOY GETTING TREATED LIKE HUMAN GARBAGE!

My sister worked for these folks at Mercer Kitchen way back in the days, in 1998 the year the restaurant and hotel opened.

I am just amazed that the thieving Lois Freedman is still around after all of the years!! watch those private party tips ppl!! read on…

My sis was hired by, then consultant,Jenny Yip, and was well liked and loved, by the entire staff and management. i wtinessed this myself on several visits.
All was well until the day MR. Jean Goerges himself came in and made the mistake of complimenting my sister on her appearance in front of Miss Freedman. This was the beginning of a viscious witch hunt that ended with my sister getting fired from a job she loved 2 weeks later!

–Apparently this innocent flirtation/compliment is a big no-no in Lois world!! As she is the ex-girlfriend that Jean Georges had, while still married to his first wife. Then he gets divorced and promptly marries the amazingly gorgeous Thai 19 year old coat check girl( or so the story goes)who never had to work again, went on a worldwind vacations with her new hubby, and had the ONLY amazing wedding.
JG completely skips over poor Lois who waited all those years for this divorce to take place.bitter much lois?! Apparently Lois remains employed b/c of JG’s guilt.

–the other scandal with her is that whenever there were any major private parties, with thousands of dollars worth of gratuity included on the guest checks, –she would show up the following day in brand new designer clothes, shoes, fur coats!, that no one had seen her in before!! (they were robbing the poor waitstaff blind!)
Apparently, all the checks for the private parties would be handled by Lois and management directly, except that back in 1998 the management at Mercer Kitchen were unaware that a duplicate closed check would print out in the kitchen as well. The waitstaff keep the dupes as proof that they were being ripped off by management!!

–At some point,my sister heard from reliable sources that there was a class action law suit of some sort after she was fired, but she couldn’t bear to participate in it b/c this wowan had sucked the life out of her the year that she worked at the Mercer and just wanted to move on. Pity, becuse we heard later that participants in the lawsuit had gotten PAID their due years later!! -one of them omws a restaurant of their own of in Brooklyn now, since about 03′…

Unfortunately, the general public never gets wind of these type of goings on in popular celebrity chef owned 3 and 4 star restaurants, because these lawsuits are generally settled out of court, with the complainants forced to sign confidentialty agreements in order to receive their settlements. All this to avoid bad publicity.

–I’m putting this info out there, because the loss of the job at Mercer Kitchen was the beginning of a series of devastating events that ended up deeply impacting my sister’s life, health, and well being.
-(Including medical problems that were not tended to properly as she lost her health insurance after being fired by Lois.) If she could have, she would have written these words herself.
I never worked at the Mercer myslef, or any other JG restaurant, and never will knowing that Lois Freedman is still in employ with that sheisty ass restaurant group!! they will steal your hard earned tips, and fire you for no reason!!
Always have a healthy suspicion of restaurants that are constantly hiring! They only do this because they can’t retain any staff.
Instead of Jean Georges try any of the Union Square Hospitaltiy Group restauants. it’s kinda the same s@#t, but at least the servers take turns handling their own tip cash reports at the end of the night. At least this was true of Elegen Madison Park back in 00′& 01′ when i worked there.
