Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with an accent, it’s even a bit sexy, HOWEVER….I can’t help but notice the growing number of service staff who’s English is clearly not thier 1st or 2nd language.
The ability to communicate is essential in the restaurant business. I recently went out to eat at a local place where I made a slight modification from linguini to penne pasta. Whenever I had a customer substitution, I wrote Bolognese sub Penne and it was universally understood by the kitchen.
The waiter was a nice fellow,energetic service,but sadly,me and my freinds were not able to understand the specials,choices of wines by the glass or anything this hardworking man was trying to sell us.
When I my pasta came out with linguini,instead of penne, I asked to have it sent back for what I wanted usually,I would just eat it and not make a fuss, but when the same dish came back to me hotter!, that was the last straw. I think he meant that I wanted more fire instead of refire. The manager came over and this guy must have been his cousin or brother in law that imported him for that job. In his broken english, I was offered wine and dessert as my guests food also had to be refired as it now cold. Isn’t that a waste of money or food costs?
The money restaurants try to save by hiring illegal immigrants must outweigh these mistakes. Many businesses want to avoid paying employment taxes that pay for Unemployment.
I realize that we are a nation of immigrants ect….blah blah blah but I have noticed that more and more restaurant waiters are unable to command the English language.
I’m all for people comming here LEGALLY and working hard to blend it but, because they are cheaper, don’t complain and are so desparate for work they are valuable to greedy employers looking to save money on employee tax,but now there are more and more of them. When will it stop? Why do I have to learn to speak Spanish?
Before I get deluged with defensive posts, to all of the illegal workers comming here when jobs for American’s are scarce, remember that YOUR ONLY VALUE is your cheap labor! Whether you are from China, Russia, Mexico,Guatamala or Canada.

I don’t think billy bob was referring to “citizens” but to people who can’t speak English properly. Apparently,is so insulted that she needs to post twice. Who uses “dope” anymore?

I agree with it being a communication issue,but it’s also a good way to learn and assimilate.
Some “Dope” doesn’t understand the use of punctuation marks or how to put a clear and coherent sentence together. Yet, this “Dope” has the audacity to tell others to “learn” . Perhaps aa should take his or her advice and remember about learning…..English composition. I don’t know what “aa” is so upset about? Someone is just voicing an opinion and aa has to get his or her undies in a bundle.
As for the issue, greedy business owners always have and always will take advantage of immigrants both illegal and legal if it saves them on employment taxes.
There are many people who live here who are not citizens, there is such a thing as legal aliens, that would be people of another country who went through the proper channels to come here LEGALLY!

I agree with alot of what you are saying. Why hire a legal employee when you can exploit an illegal one? It’s not right that in these times we are not banding together, being a legal in the workforce has become a shortcoming instead of being appreciated. It really offends me also when you HAVE to speak a foreign language in order to even be considered for employment. Before you all crucify me I am fluent in another language besides english, but people coming here from other countries that don’t use english should make the effort. This exploitation by restaurant owners benefits no one. Legal tax paying people can’t find decent work and illegal people are not paid properly for their work, let it be exclusion of hours, not a rightful wage, or just plain theft. It needs to stop, where is our government??!!
