Has anyone else been OHS-Used?
Establishment: OHSU
Location: Marquam Hill
I know that the rants on this site are typically reserved for restaurants, but as many of you probably know- contract food service can be the pits. I just spent time at OHSU; I ignored several warnings about working there because the pay was pretty good as well as the benfits. But alas, I got hosed by the under-achieving, self-indulgent Chef Robert. Has anyone else got any interesting stories about that hole?

No, OHSU is self operated. I was union but my rep was no help at all. I actually left Eurest Dining (Compass) to go there, which is a move I do not regret. That company, especially the upper management in this region- is a joke.
Are horrible Theresa and horrible Leslie still around as regionals—with all their consumate evilness?? And I feel for you. On all counts
Well, if the Theresa you are talking about looks like Harry Potter- yes. But she is a District Manager along with Susan, who is okay but gutless overall. Leslie is the regional. I never saw her the entire time I was there. I only spoke to her once (over the phone) and you are right. She is horrible. What about Christa? Did you work with that beast?
When I worked for them, I reported directly to Leslie—but sometimes had to deal with Theresa (who was “above” me, but not my supervisor, if that makes sense). They’re both complete, heinous bitches.
And if you’re referring to someone very fat, with Eurest all but imprinted on her butt as Christa, then yes, I’ve had the distinct displeasure. And though it was only on a couple of special events, she was an utter bitch.
And you’re right about the positions. It’s been awhile since my trauma, so I had mercifully forgotten which stupid, pointless middle manager title those horrors held.
Yeah, that’s the Christa I was talking about. She was actually my direct supervisor for a while. Apparently, somebody was having issues balancing the books and when I was helping out at Microsoft in Redmond (they specifically asked for me), her and Leslie tried to pin it all on me. C’mon…..I wasn’t even there at the time! To top it off, I was offered a MUCH better position up in Seattle which was based on my performance at Microsoft up to that point. But they blocked that from going down by trying to blame their own incompetence on me. That’s when I flew the coop. It just wasn’t worth it.
Leslie probably stole something or slipped the salary of one of her buddies in there. There’s a lot of THAT with her, too. While i feel for you, I’m glad to know it wasn’t just yours truly that had issues.
chef robert is away right now and staff is loving it he is a mystery of human emotion that should be put to use herding chickens
That is a spot on assessment of Robert. What are your thoughts on the new Exec Chef, Urbano? I found him rather strange and a little out of his depth- but a nice enough guy.

Is a directly employed by OHSU or is it part of Compass Group (I forget if it’s Eurest or what crappy division that’s there)? Because if you’re with Compass Group, you have my profound sympathies.
I had the “pleasure” of working for them as a manager over 5 years ago. A seemingly good salary and benefits package masks the fact that A) you’ll do all the work yourself (I had to routinely vacum and clean bathrooms because the contract I inheirited was so poorly negotiated—I don’t think I’m above all that, just it wasn’t what I signed on for) and B) because you do all the work, you can forget about EVER taking a vacation. Oh and all the corporate fees and services you’ll be charged for but never receive.
And Compass likes to babble a lot about all their ethics and standards. Except that their top people were embroiled in a huge, multi million dollar bribery scandal a few years ago. And for hourly employees, there’s the tendency to expert bling devotion and flexibility—even as you cut hours to the bone.
That said, if you work for OHSU itself, my husband has worked for them in a “professional” capacity for over 11 years and it’s always been great (good $$$, PTO and benefits). But then, he’s union and (unlike yours truly) not one to make waves, so there you have it.
