Whats up with Bruce Carey Group?

Establishment: 23 Hoyt

Location: NW Portland

I see Bruce Cary is hiring a new manager on Craigslist, the ad says you will be position starts with a base hourly wage until you prove yourself to be a good leader, then could quickly evolve into a salaried position.

Does this mean we will pay you $10 an hour and we know you will take it because the economy sucks and you can’t find a job when in a normal economy we would be paying you twice as much?

Anyone worked or working for these guys?

Past experiences??

I’d say you’ve probably hit the nail on the head–dead on! My only encounter with Bruce Carey was when I first moved here from NYC, 11 years ago for a server position at Zefiro. I had worked at NY Times 2 star restaurants (which would be 4 stars here) and had declined an offer to work at 21 because we were moving here (the hubby had an offer).

Anyway, it was quite apparent during our interview that Mr. Carey viewed nothing and no one as fabulous as himself (and was beyond patronizing)…but maybe time has humbled him. I was also behind him once (a couple of years later) at the downtown Rite Aid, where he was being completely pandering and obnoxious to the poor clerk (while holding up the line, as well).

Here is how the interview works at Hoyt (and other properties owned by him):
You go into the designated place, put your name on a list to meet “Tom”. All you do is meet him, that’s it. He looks at your resume, and that’s it. Even though in ever single one of their ads, they want the “best of this” and “the most professional that”, this Tom clown does not asked you one single question about the rest. business whatsoever. Don’t see how they get the best of anyone. I just wished they would tone down their ads, and be truthful about the fact that they are only looking at the way you look…so sad

There are tons of restaurant jobs on Cr@igslist. It goes to show that even in the worst unemployment times, restaurant employees will always be a pain in the ass & restaurants will always need new ones. I can’t believe how difficult it is just to expect your coworkers to shower. No wonder managers have to be dicks. People are so gross.

As mentioned in another post, the owners & managers @ BCR are crooked two faced thieves. A few servers and bartenders carve out a niche making good money but everyone else slaves for little reward. They are known for making promises forward for pay and not following through. You must press them to get what they have promised.

Yes, they only care about looks up front. Which isn’t so bad, but when they accidentally get someone with talent they aren’t smart enough to keep them around. But they’re still in business, which says a good bit about their clientele. Overpaid, uneducated dimwits.

What amazes me about Mr. Carey is his arrogance, everything said here reflects my experiences as well. My wife had the misfortune of working for this jerk a while back, and she wound up doing more than her share of work. The good news is, Mr. Carey is so full of himself that he’s pretty easy to fool. He’s an irritating man, but at the end of the day, I think he inspires as much laughter as anger. I’d like to say he’s a one-of-a-kind, but unfortunately, he has found the city where types like him are so prevalent thatt he blends in to the scenery. If you didn’t get a job from this place, consider yourself lucky, recession or not.
