New York City's bars and restaurants employ 164,900 workers. Without a union to defend their interests, these workers depend on the integrity of their employers for safe working condition and fair labor practices. While most of New York City's bars and restaurants live up to these expectations, some do not. Throughout the city there are bar and restaurant employers who, rather than respecting and rewarding the work of their employees, exploit and abuse those employees.

Shamelessrestaurants.com was established during the first week of June 2004 as an answer to that abuse. To date, the site has had an overwhelming number of hits.

The site has three primary objectives:

1) to provide a forum in which restaurant employees can air their employment grievances and, at the same time, share information with each other about the worst practices of employers;

2) to provide restaurant workers seeking employment a “black list” of bad employers; and

3) to expose abusive restaurant employers and pressure them to reform their labor practices.
