This is not really a story but a question for other servers out there. I am going back a bit here but I wonder if anybody else ever had problems with back taxes from working in the restaurant business and what you did to handle it.
I used to work for Atlantic Grill and have ended up oweing the IRS thousands of dollars in back taxes. I understand that the withholding amount and making sure it is correct is ultimately my own responsibility but I noticed that on two consecutive years that the amount withheld was drastically different. My schedule was more or less the same as was my reported income but the amount withheld was thousands less from one year to the next. I know that sometimes the hourly wage doesn't add up to enough to cover the tips but all else being equal I don't understand this and wonder if I can get any help. The only thing I can think of is that the restaurant must have shorted me a lot of hours. Has this happened to anybody else?
From one year to the next on virtually the same amount of income the amount withheld went from over 4000 to about 850?!? WTF?

can't you check your hours on the paystubs that you get each week? it's unlikely that you're getting beat on hours if you are clocking in and out properly. |
