Title:   Gross and illegal treatment of employees
Name Of Establishment:   Kellari's Parea
Location:   36 E. 20th St
Story:   I am writing this post anonymously because I still need to
maintain some semblance of dignity in the restaurant world (IE.
everyone knows everyone type of thing. Anyway, my tale begins at
the not so old Kellari's Parea. Purchased last summer from the
Iron Chef run Michael Symon group, which included some wealthy,
yet culinary-ignorant people, Kellari's Parea picked up on a
Greek themed restaurant and added it as their third restaurant in
the Kellari group. Someone should have realized the problems
right off the bat when a high profile chef runs for the hills
from his partners, and then the subsequent rapid demise of what
was a successful restaurant (if not well regarded by the
traditional Greek community). But the bulk of the partners
remained on board ion a not so silent type of status. Arguments
ensued for the majority of the 10 months or so of existence about
how to run the place. Menus have been made, remade, rewritten,
replaced, reviewed and returned back to square one. Anyone out
there know of a place that has had 5 menus in its 1st 10
months??? All this sets the stage for a story of abuse, both
sexually charged and verbal, mistreatment, illegal accounting
practices (anyone ever received a bogus W-2 statement, complete
with fake tax ID number?) and blatant disregard for any city
laws. As an employee (I won't state my title or time of stay),
I have endured listening to male partners and managers (females
do not belong in the Greek world of business) make sexual charged
comments to and about fellow employees such as: HOSTESSES:
"She's hot---look at her tits---I don't care about her lack of
experience, put her up front as hostess--we need to bring people
in from the street"; "Is that what your wearing tonight??? Go
home and come back tomorrow wearing something shorter."; "Are
you wearing flats??? Go back and get some high heels to show of
your legs". BARTENDERS: "I don't care about firing someone if
they don't look the part---and she is just not hot enough to keep
her job here."; "Did you see her ass??? She worked at a strip
club, so we know she'll shake it for our regulars (and by
regulars that means partners)."; "Will your boyfriend care about
you working here? You don't have one? Well, would you like to
have a Greek boyfriend?"---this last one transpired as part of an
interview for a hostess who was too young to understand the
nature of the comment. Sorry, but my fingers are cramping
right now (how the hell do people type all day?!) More to come
in the extremely near future. Hope to hear from some of you,
especially if you have ever worked or dined
there!!!
