A little something about restaurant temp agencies in San Diego

Establishment: Food Team (Entry 1)

Location: Clairemont, off the 805

This is my first of which I’m sure will be several entries.  I’ve made the rounds and seen alot of crap.  Aside from the occasional post shift chat with like minded coworkers, I haven’t really had a forum to vent.  When it comes to being mistreated (or witnessing people being mistreated) I carry a chip on my shoulder the size of an oval serving tray.

Temp agencies make a killing by exploiting your blood, sweat, and tears.  Literally.

If you’ve ever been cut, scratched, had a broken bone, worked on the flight deck of a very popular local museum in 90 degree weather or in some poorly manicured, dog crap crusted backyard, been yelled at to tears by a leering, small time caterer that lives in Hillcrest and operates out of a rat infested kitchen on 54th street or an overweight catering CEO (deep breath,) been made to carry stacks of glassware up several flights of stairs, or move heavy boxes filled with containers of poorly iced, sun baked dairy, and then been paid a whopping $10.00 an hour with the hopes of making an extra dollar or two an hour after a month’s worth of service you might know what I’m talking about.

These agencies charge their clients up to $35.00 an hour (I’ve seen the invoices) for your hard work then pay a fraction of the cost to their employees.  If you’re willing to work long hours, be available when they ask, and not put up a fuss when they screw you over you might be able to get up to the twenty dollar an hour mark.

Promises, promises…

Just how do they screw you over?

Food Team

Food Team in San Diego is run by guy named Scott.  When I worked there the buzz was that he played favorites and was particular to boys and men.  Not hard to believe when I finally met his Staffing Coordinator, an uneasy fellow named Jim.  (I should point out here that I’m not phobic.  I used to hang out in some of the most liberal clubs in California.  Indeed some of my best friends are gay.)

New to town and eager to work , one of my first gigs was on the Midway Museum.  We were hired out to work for a company called Culinary Concepts, which is operated by a beastly woman named Kathy Koenig.

Seems I got the wrong orders or went the wrong way or was working on something I wasn’t supposed to be becasue after just a short while on the job, somebody grabs me by my arm, asking my why I was doing what I was and why I wasn’t elsewhere working on something else.  I apologized for my mistake and told them that in the future they should not put their hands on me.  Turns out this hulking mess of a woman was no other than Kathy Koenig, herself.  She called for help on her walkie talkie and I was quickly escorted off the flight deck and out of the Museum.

When I asked Scott how he was going to handle it, he told me that I was making life difficult for him and that my services would no longer be needed…

Well, first of all, food service has always been a dead end unless you happen to have a rather impressive culinary degree/education. In the case of this young man being “man-handled” by the beastly woman, your first stop, after being fired for making life difficult, should be to the local labor board to file a complaint for physical abuse and wrongful termination of employment. Even though you are young, you still have rights that are protected by the Dept. of Labor. It sounds to me that you have a justified case in which to bring legal action against not only The Beast, but also Scott. All it will require is a phone call.

You have no idea how happy it made me to come across your blog about Kathy Koenig. I have had encouters with this biotch of a wo-man myself and i can not tell you how pleased i am to see that others out there are making her abuse and intolerable treatment of others publicly known.

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

One admits that life seems to be very expensive, nevertheless some people need money for different stuff and not every one earns big sums money. Thence to receive fast loan and just small business loan should be a right way out.

Lucky you didn’t work for them in Portland, Orlando, or Denver. No one who worked for them in 2009 has received W2’s yet. Good luck getting them! This is the shadiest company I have ever worked for, everything you say hear seems to reflect my experiences as well. I too needed money fast, but it wasn’t worth the hassles.
