What are they like ?
Establishment: Cohn restaurant group
Location: San Diego
Has anyone worked for a Cohn restaurant in San Diego? If so, what are they like to work for? They’re very successful here–are they a horror show or a fair and healthy group…
TIA

First off, CRG is a pretty good company to work for. However, their politics and pay suck. I managed a restaurant for them for a year and I had had over five years management experiance. I made 48,000 in my old place of residence working for a company as large as them. I only made 37,500 with them and I have TWO degrees. Needless to say, they dont give a shit about thier actual servers etc. My friend was a sous chef in one of thier restaurants working the same 60 plus hours as me. She only got 10.00 and hour and now makes 15.00 as a regular line chef elsewhere. They do not take care of thier managers for the amount of shit and we put up with. Their DO is awesome, but I feel they have so much on thier plate, they have no idea what direction they need take. Dakota is sucking the life out of them, meanwhile Blue Point is thier golden egg. Lose some of the units and stop buying up San Diego mom and pop places such as Thee Bungalow. STAY OUT OF OB!!!!!!!!!!!!
Years ago I had interviewed with them for a management position. With over 5 years hands on experience up to the GM level. They came in with an offer that was laughable and nonnegotiable. They claimed it was a starting rate that amounted to $15,000 less than my prior employment. They try to sell the fact that they are a small family company that takes care of you, although I have a tough enough time asking my own family for help with the bills. What they pay their managers to take care of their prized locations should be reviewed.

The little while I was with the Cohn Group was smooth. I went to culinary school soon after so I had to quit. If I had not gone to school I would of stayed. I worked at Blue Point Coastal off of 5th ave. The best part (and I know it’s stupid but, hey, contributions and graciousness from employers are few and far between) but for the company party, the bought out a bowling place and had all the five restaurants meet up. It was open for staff only all day and I think there was cheep booze and stuff. First time employed by some company that did that, so I was impressed.
