Unethical
Establishment: Matador Restaurant and Tequila Bar
Location: Ballard/West Seattle/Tacoma/Redmond
I have work for Matador for over a year. In that time Ive seen many things I find to be unethical.
Many times working behind the bar, I was encouraged to pour well liquor instead of the premium liquor the guest paid for. If you were sitting at a table and ordered goose…good chance you were drinking smirnoff.
They do not hire female bartenders. Ladies on the floor, guys behind the bar. They prefer to hire females that fit a certain mold, as opposed to hiring the most qualified candidate. I have watched to the owners sit at the bar and question the manager of his decision on a hire based on the fact "She is ugly".
They do not pay the kitchen staff a decent wage. They enforce kitchen tip outs because they are too cheap to pay them, thus making servers and bartenders cover the difference. Keep in mind they do not to catering or banquets so an auto-grat is not enforced.
These 2 owners stole a concept from Pesos’ and tried to call it there own. Though Pesos’ didnt "win" the lawsuit they should have.

I’ve bartended at Matador for a long time and I’ve never been told to pour well liquor instead of premium. There is only one person I EVER saw pouring cheap booze instead of expensive stuff and that was a certain bar manager that was trying to get good liquor costs… he no longer works there… and left angry…. hmmmm….
Well from a customer perspective and as a overqualified server who has applied there. I have been left with the impression that the Matador hires a certain type of female base on looks. I was floored when a manager hired a server on the spot with no actual restaurant experience. And no catering doesn’t count as you dont have to manage tables. I am aware that the male bartenders have been there for fairly long, however considering that with four locations you think there would be at least one female bartender and find it highly suspect that none are to be found. Then again what do you expect from a place which has yuppie ethics?
What Matador does is their own choice if you don’t like it don’t work there.
Thank you Matador for not having a toothless nasty hag as my server! I like having young hotties wait on me, I don’t know about the rest of you folks.

Um last time I checked…I have all my teeth, thank you. My only problem is that I’m tall, educated, and fabulous! It doesn’t excactly take a lot of brain power to make an incidental observation. I’m glad that I don’t work there, because I make much more money bartending and assholes like you I really LOVE to fuck with. As far as I see it, your shitty tippers if I’m nice or mean. So why not be mean?

I also used to work for the matador and worked there for over TWO years….I have NEVER witnessed any booze swapping and found their tip out procedures similar to the other places I have worked over the PAST TEN YEARS IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY…..
As a FEMALE BARTENDER, I only waited tables, but their bar staff didnt move, so I didnt feel shut out of a chance…I applied as a server, not a BT, made a shit-ton of cash, and truly liked the people I worked with, and for. Dont know them well, but seems like these guys worked in the industry for years and years from the back to the front of the house and seemed to know the drill. They WORKED to GET WHERE THEY ARE and I suggest YOU DO THE SAME as you sound like a bitter ex-employee out to start some shit.
